During a long leste wind, which brought Funchal's highest recorded shade temperature (38.4°), fires set criminally, reportedly by angry herders, destroyed much of Madeira's forest, including pine woods at Monte and São Roque, until rain put them out, causing over 2,000 contos of damage.
