Vieira (Augusto Elmano)
Biography of Augusto Elmano Vieira (born 1892), Funchal lawyer, journalist, playwright and councillor.
He was born in Funchal on 2 October 1892 and is a bachelor (bacharel, university graduate) in Law of the University of Lisbon (Universidade de Lisboa), having completed his degree in 1920. As a student at our lyceum (state secondary school) he contributed to the Primeiro de Dezembro (‘First of December’) and the Academico, and later to Século, Diário Nacional, Tempo, Diário da Tarde (‘Evening Daily’), etc., of Lisbon, and to the Diário de Noticias and Diário da Madeira (‘Madeira Daily’) of Funchal. He was one of the leaders of the students’ strike of 1919.
He collaborated on the revue of Madeiran manners entitled A Madeira por dentro, which was staged at the Teatro Dr Manuel de Arriaga, and on the regional operetta A Menina dos Bordados, which was performed at the Paris pavilion. In 1915, when he began his law studies at the University of Lisbon, he wrote the dramatic episode A Ultima Bênção, which was published in Funchal in 1917.
Elmano Vieira practises as a lawyer in Funchal and is a member of the Funchal Municipal Council (1921).

His birthplace and where he practised law.
The capital of the archipelago and seat of the principal captaincy, where settlement began; it was made a vila c.1451–52. Its bay, the widest in the archipelago, lies between Ponta do Garajau and Ponta da Cruz and offers sheltered anchorage, though its harbour had never been studied oceanographically. Funchal's municipal theatre, built with a loan by the council on the former convent grounds and the site of the 1823 market. Begun in 1884 and inaugurated in 1888 as Teatro D. Maria Pia, it was renamed after Manuel de Arriaga in 1921. It hosted revues such as A Madeira por dentro, lectures and concerts, including the 1921 orfeão.
