Vieira (Augusto José)
Biography of Augusto José Vieira (1861–1918), Funchal-born republican journalist and author of a history of the Republican Party.
He was born in Funchal on 2 October 1861 and died on 27 December 1918 in Lisbon, where he had lived for more than 40 years. He was the brother of Councillor (conselheiro, honorary title of the royal council) Manuel José Vieira and of João José Vieira, of whom we shall speak below. He attended the Funchal lyceum (state secondary school) and enrolled at the Army School (Escola do Exército), but never completed the course. In this city he was editor of the newspaper A Republica, and in Lisbon he contributed to various newspapers, always championing the most advanced ideas. He was president of the Civil Registration Association (Associação do Registo Civil) and secretary of the Freethought Federation (Federação do Livre Pensamento). In 1909 he published the Historia do Partido Republicano, which remained unfinished and of which three volumes appeared.
