This lane links Rua do Dr. Vieira, or Rua da Carreira (‘track’), with Largo de São Pedro. On 24 April 1919, at the request of the Civil Registration Association (Associação do Registo Civil), it was given the name of the Madeiran Augusto José Vieira.

Augusto José Vieira, brother of Councillor (conselheiro, honorary title of the royal council) Manuel José Vieira, was born in Funchal on 2 October 1861 and died in Lisbon on 27 December 1918.
