Carreira (street)
Original title: Carreira (Rua da)
One of Funchal's oldest streets, officially Rua do Dr. Vieira, named after horse races once run there and home to noble families, chapels and the British cemetery.
Its modern name is Rua do Dr. Vieira, but ordinary people know it only by its old name. ‘It is called’, say the Saudades, ‘the Carreira dos Cavalos [horse run] because horses were customarily raced there’. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, and in former times many of the noblest and most distinguished families of Funchal had their residences there. At present it runs from the Largo do Colégio to the Ponte de São João. Before the demolition of the Portão de São Paulo (St Paul’s Gate), near the chapel of the same name, that point was one of the limits of this street, the other being Rua de São Francisco. Besides the general name of Carreira, it bore the names Rua da Igrejinha, Rua dos Pintos, Rua de São Paulo and Rua de Manuel da Grã, each of these names corresponding to one part of the present street. The small square still called Igrejinha today, which marks the intersection of Rua das Pretas (now Câmara Pestana) and Rua da Carreira, keeps this name because a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Pity (Nossa Senhora da Piedade), commonly known as the Igrejinha (‘little church’), once stood there. Rua da Carreira is home to the old chapel of São Paulo (St Paul the Apostle), the chapel of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception and the private cemetery of the British community.
