São Paulo (street)
Original title: São Paulo (Rua de)
Former street in Funchal that ran between the Carreira gate and the São João stream, now part of Rua do Dr. Vieira; the entry also notes the surviving Largo and Travessa de São Paulo near the chapel of that name.
It ran between the Carreira (‘track’) gate and the Ribeira de São João (‘St John’s stream’), and is today part of Rua do Dr. Vieira, formerly Rua da Carreira.
Today the square in front of the chapel of St Paul (São Paulo) bears the name Largo de São Paulo, and the public way linking that square with Rua da Ribeira (‘stream’) is called Travessa de São Paulo. In former times the so-called ‘locality (sítio) of São Paulo’, which took in the surroundings of the chapel, extended as far as the bank of the Ribeira de São João.
