Account of the Protestant churches of Funchal: the Anglican church in Rua da Bela Vista (completed 1822), a second Anglican church in Rua dos Aranhas (1848) and the Scottish church.
The land on which the Anglican church in Rua da Bela Vista stands was bought by the British Factory (trading establishment of foreign merchants) in 1810 for 5,435 dollars. Some years later the Factory acquired, for 840 dollars, another plot in the same street, adjoining the first. The church was completed in March 1822 at a cost of 40,000 dollars, a sum raised through subscriptions and a voluntary contribution of 2 shillings and 6 pence on every pipa (wine cask and measure, c. 400–500 litres) of wine exported by the British merchants.
In 1848 another Anglican church was established in Rua dos Aranhas, with the botanist Richard Thomas Lowe as its chaplain. Religious disagreements among the British subjects living in Madeira led to the opening of this church, where services were held for 33 years. The Scottish church, opened in 1842 in a house in the Travessa do Surdo, now has its own building in Rua do Conselheiro, next to the Jardim Municipal (‘municipal garden’).
