Pipa

Defines the pipa, the wine cask measure used in Madeira, with its export and carreteira capacities and a 1919 alcohol rule.

The so-called shipping pipa (wine cask and measure, c. 400–500 litres), so named because it is the one used in exporting our wines, holds 418 litres, and the so-called carreteira pipa holds 500 litres. Decree no. 5,492 of 2 May 1919 set at 55 litres the quantity of alcohol required to treat one pipa of wine of 500 litres.

Chronology
