Pires

Note on the Pires surname in Madeira, citing early bearers in Funchal.

In 1566 a certain Gonçalo Pires was living in Funchal, where he held the office of clerk of the accounts (escrivão dos contos), and in 1471 Diogo Pires and Francisco Pires were resident here. It is possible that these three individuals brought the Pires family surname to Madeira.
