Mouraria (street)
Original title: Mouraria (Rua da)
Funchal street linking Rua da Carreira to Largo de São Pedro, renamed Rua do Dr. Sequeira in 1917 and later restored to its original name, recalling a Moorish quarter; it houses the former Carvalhal palace with municipal museum, archive and library.
Since 8 March 1917 it has been called (1921) Rua do Dr. Sequeira, and it links Rua da Carreira (‘track’), or Rua do Dr. Vieira, with Largo de São Pedro. In this street stands the palace that once belonged to the Counts of Carvalhal (‘oak grove’), which now houses the Municipal Museum, the Madeira District Archive (Arquivo Distrital da Madeira) and the Funchal Municipal Library (Biblioteca Municipal do Funchal).
In our view, the original name of the street should not have been changed, since it recalls that there was once a Moorish quarter on the site. A few years ago it regained its original name.
