Sequeira (Dr Maurício Augusto de)
Original title: Sequeira (Dr. Mauricio Augusto de)
Dr Maurício Augusto de Sequeira (1845–1911), Funchal physician and teacher at the Medical-Surgical School and the lyceum.
He was born in Funchal on 17 July 1845 and died in the same city on 31 October 1911. He was a bachelor (bacharel, university graduate) in philosophy and medicine from the University of Coimbra (Universidade de Coimbra) and practised medicine in Funchal. Here he also taught at the now defunct Medical-Surgical School (Escola Médico-Cirúrgica) and held the chair of physics, chemistry and natural history at our lyceum (state secondary school). He wrote a physics textbook for use in secondary schools, which was never published. We believe this was because he lost his sight some years before his death and from then on abandoned the scientific studies to which he had devoted himself. See Mouraria (‘Moorish quarter’).

The capital of the archipelago and seat of the principal captaincy, where settlement began; it was made a vila c.1451–52. Its bay, the widest in the archipelago, lies between Ponta do Garajau and Ponta da Cruz and offers sheltered anchorage, though its harbour had never been studied oceanographically. The Elucidário discusses it as a health resort with climate data and records the January 1906 disturbances, the Danish prince's visit in May 1846 and recent volcanic cones in the area.

The University of Coimbra, in mainland Portugal, was supported by Madeira through tithes and attended by many Madeirans. Several of them graduated there, mostly in law, and others, such as António da Gama and Vitúrio Lopes Rocha, also taught there. Júlio Augusto Henriques held its chair of botany.
