Short entry on the Fort of São Pedro, also called Forte Novo, a Funchal fortification completed in 1707 that stood at the east end of the old Praça Académica. Its demolition began in 1897.
It stood at the eastern end of the old Praça Académica (‘academic square’), and its demolition began on 20 September 1897, under an authorisation from the Ministry of War. Its construction was completed in 1707, according to an inscription that was on the gate of the fort and was transcribed on page 629 of the notes to ‘Longing for the Homeland’ (Saudades da Terra).
The Fort of São Pedro was also known as the New Fort (Forte Novo).
