This was the name of a large open space now occupied by the Campo do Almirante Reis (formerly Campo de Dom Carlos). The square took its name from having been built with the proceeds of ticket sales from a performance given by the Funchal student body at the Teatro do Bom Gosto to celebrate the marriage of Queen Maria II, in 1837. The space was recently embellished with a small pond, a garden, seating, etc., and there the Municipal Council (Câmara Municipal) had a building put up for a children’s park for poor children, which was opened in 1939 under the name of Dona Maria Lívia Nosolini.

Chronology
  • The Funchal academy staged a performance celebrating Queen Maria II's marriage, whose proceeds built the Praça Académica.
  • A municipal park for poor children named after D. Maria Lívia Nosolini was inaugurated at the Praça Académica.
