This is the square at the main entrance of the Fort of São Lourenço (St Lawrence). It was opened when the Teatro Grande was demolished, during the governorship of Dom Álvaro da Costa Macedo. Before this theatre disappeared, two narrow streets ran alongside part of the fortress walls and led to its main entrance. The name given to the square recalls the restoration of the Constitutional Charter (Carta Constitucional) on 5 June 1834.

Chronology
  • The constitutional (liberal) government and Constitutional Charter were proclaimed in Funchal, peacefully in the town though with violence in some parishes, establishing liberal institutions in Madeira.
