Article Nº 3318 Chapel Funchal Vol. III · p. 434

St Elizabeth (chapels)

Original title: Santa Isabel (Capelas de)

Describes two chapels dedicated to Saint Elizabeth: one inside the Misericórdia building in Funchal, probably built in the early eighteenth century and noted for its gilded carved altar, and another attached to the hospital of Santa Cruz.

Map: Madeira (3)

The chapel of this dedication found in the building of the Misericórdia (Holy House of Mercy, a lay charitable brotherhood) in this city is handsome and spacious, and is reached through the building’s entrance hall. It must have been built at the beginning of the 18th century. The high altar, of gilt carved woodwork (talha dourada), is of great beauty, though perhaps with an excessive crowding of ornament. (1921)

Next to the hospital of the town (vila) of Santa Cruz (‘Holy Cross’) there also stands a chapel dedicated to St Elizabeth of Portugal.
