Monument to João Gonçalves Zargo
Original title: Monumento a João Gonçalves Zargo
Bronze statue of João Gonçalves Zargo, first captain-donatary of Funchal, by Francisco Franco, inaugurated on the Avenida Arriaga in 1934.
– Homage should long ago have been paid to the first captain-donatary (capitão-donatário) of Funchal, worthily perpetuating his venerable memory among us. Although it can no longer be claimed today, as has so often been done, that he was the discoverer of the archipelago, it must be acknowledged that he was the most authoritative and fruitful promoter of the early colonisation of Madeira, to which his prestigious name remains indissolubly linked. His monument stands on Avenida Arriaga: a majestic bronze statue by the distinguished Madeiran sculptor Francisco Franco, formally inaugurated on 28 May 1934.
