Mascarenhas (Dom Francisco de)
Original title: Mascarenhas (D. Francisco de)
Governor and captain-general of Madeira from 1665, deposed and expelled by a popular uprising in 1668.
His appointment as Governor and Captain-General (capitão-general, military governor of Madeira) of Madeira dates from 31 July 1665, and he took up the post on 28 November of the same year. He faced great difficulties during his governorship, and on 18 September 1668 a popular uprising broke out which deposed him, arrested him and then forced him aboard ship, as will be told more fully in the article Popular Riots. He was replaced on an interim basis by the holder of the entail (morgado) Aires de Ornelas e Vasconcelos.
He was the son of the Count of Santa Cruz (‘Holy Cross’) and had served with valour in the War of Restoration. He died on 25 February 1699.
