Ornelas de Vasconcelos (Ayres de)

Ayres de Ornelas de Vasconcelos was elected governor and captain-general of Madeira by the nobility and people on 18 September 1668, after a popular sedition deposed Governor Francisco de Mascarenhas. He served until his successor Ayres de Saldanha took office in 1669.

Following the popular sedition that deposed and imprisoned Governor Francisco de Mascarenhas (see that entry), ‘Ayres de Ornellas was elected by the nobility and the people as governor and captain-general on 18 September 1668. The prince regent Dom Pedro confirmed him in this high office, and he remained in it until his successor, Ayres de Saldanha, took office the following year, 1669.

He was the great-great-great-great-grandfather of two distinguished Madeirans, Archbishop Dom Aires de Ornelas and Agostinho de Ornelas, peer of the realm.
