Jangão

An inhabited locality in Ponta do Sol, former seat of the Vale da Bica entail founded by João Esmeraldo in 1522, with the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade.

An inhabited locality (sítio) in the parish (freguesia) of Ponta do Sol (‘point of the sun’). It was the seat of the former entailed estate (morgadio) of Vale da Bica (‘spout valley’), founded in 1522 by João Esmeraldo, whose last representative was the distinguished Madeiran Councillor (conselheiro, honorary title of the royal council) Aires de Ornelas. Here stands the chapel of Our Lady of Pity (Nossa Senhora da Piedade), which belonged to this entailed house (casa vinculada). It was founded by António de Carvalhal Esmeraldo around 1670 and restored in 1777 and in 1879 by the respective administrators, Francisco de Ornelas de Vasconcelos and Councillor Agostinho de Ornelas de Vasconcelos.

  • The Jangão chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade at Ponta do Sol was restored by Agostinho de Ornelas de Vasconcelos and reblessed by the archbishop of Goa on 12 October 1879.
