Janela (stream)

Original title: Janela (Ribeira da)

The Ribeira da Janela, the longest and fullest stream in Madeira, rising on the Paul da Serra and feeding the Rabaçal levadas.

This is the longest and fullest watercourse in Madeira. It rises on the Paul da Serra (‘upland marsh’) and, crossing the parish (freguesia) that bears the same name, flows into the ocean there. A short distance from its mouth lies an islet that also bears the same name. The well-known Rabaçal levadas (irrigation channels) draw much of their water from the springs of this stream, captured at its sources.
