Map: Madeira (2)

An inhabited locality (sítio) in the parish (freguesia) of Santo António, Funchal. The name is a corruption of João Boto, an early settler. In this locality there is a chalybeate spring which at one time gained considerable fame because certain therapeutic qualities were attributed to it. For this reason the Funchal Municipal Council (Câmara Municipal do Funchal) had the water chemically and bacteriologically analysed. The result of the analysis was published in a pamphlet in 1900 and reproduced on pp. 119 ff. of the book Paroquia de Santo Antonio da Ilha da Madeira, by one of the authors of this Elucidário.
