Boliqueme

Boliqueme is an important locality in the parish of Santo António, Funchal, probably named after the Algarve parish of the same name by early settlers from the Algarve.

It is one of the most important localities (sítio) in the parish (freguesia) of Santo António. Since there is a parish of this name in the province of the Algarve, and most of the first settlers of this island were from the Algarve, it is not surprising that they gave this locality the name of that parish. It is also possible that the orographic features of the Algarve parish and of this locality, together with other points of resemblance, gave rise to the name. Examples of this are frequent in the history of our discoveries, and they are not rare even in Madeira.
