A locality (sítio) in the parish (freguesia) of Santo António (‘St Anthony’), Funchal. It was home to the quinta (country estate) that shares its name, with an excellent country house and an adjoining chapel of St Anne and St John the Baptist (Santana e São João), built in 1814; the residence itself is of older construction. It was on this quinta that, in 1923, the benevolent Brethren of St John of God (Irmãos de São João de Deus) established a hospital for the insane, named the Trapiche Nursing Home (Casa de Saúde do Trapiche), which we have already described elsewhere in this work. See asylums (Manicómios).
