Quinta
Inhabited locality in the parish of Caniço, seat of one of Madeira's oldest entailed estates, founded by Álvaro de Ornelas in the late fifteenth century, with the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Consolação.
An inhabited locality (sítio) in the parish (freguesia) of Caniço (‘reed’). There was once a quinta (country estate) or country house here, and the chapel of Our Lady of Consolation (Nossa Senhora da Consolação) still stands. Both belonged to the entailed estate (morgadio) founded here at the end of the 15th century by Álvaro de Ornelas, which was one of the oldest entails (instituições vinculares) in Madeira and whose last representative was Councillor (conselheiro, honorary title of the royal council) Aires de Ornelas (1866-1930). The Consolação (‘consolation’) chapel was built by Aires de Ornelas e Vasconcelos around 1591 and rebuilt around the middle of the 18th century (see Garajau and Jangão).
