Abroad
In the locality (sítio) of Azenha (‘water mill’), in the parish (freguesia) of Caniço (‘reed’), beside a country house that belonged to former holders of an entail, stands the chapel of Our Lady of Succour (Nossa Senhora do Socorro). It is now far gone in ruin and put to secular uses, and neither the name of its founder nor the year of its construction is known.
A note in the Saudades states that there was a chapel with this dedication in the parish of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos (‘the narrows of Câmara de Lobos’), founded in 1684 by Maria de Aguiar, widow of Gonçalo de Faria Leal.
There was one in the parish of Canhas, in the locality of Socorro (‘succour’), founded by João Fernandes Linhares in 1665. In the parish of Porto da Cruz (‘harbour of the cross’) there is a chapel with this patron saint, originally known as Our Lady of Bethlehem (Nossa Senhora de Belém). We do not know who its founder was, but it belonged to the entailed estate (morgadio) established by Captain Manuel Telo Moniz de Meneses, of the house of Lagoa (‘lake’) in the same parish, which was later called the Torresão entailed estate. It was built around 1713 and is in a fair state of repair; it is the property of Dona Cristina de Campos Pinto Soares, who lives in Lisbon (1921).
