Map: Madeira (3)

An inhabited locality (sítio) in the parish (freguesia) of Caniço (‘reed’). It takes its name from a chapel that once stood there, dedicated to Our Lady of Deliverance (Nossa Senhora do Livramento), which was the centre of a well-attended pilgrimage, now transferred to the parish church. The foundation of this chapel is attributed to Sebastião de Oliveira, around the middle of the 17th century; he held land there as a sesmaria (royal land grant to settlers on condition of cultivation).
