Our Lady of Deliverance (chapels)
Original title: Nossa Senhora do Livramento (Capelas de)
Chapels of Our Lady of Deliverance in Caniço, Ponta do Sol, Monte, Estreito da Calheta and São Vicente, with founders and dates; the Caniço one was a pilgrimage site.
In the parish (freguesia) of Caniço (‘reed’) there stood a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Deliverance (Nossa Senhora do Livramento), in the locality (sítio) that still bears this name today. It was the object of an old and well-attended pilgrimage. Since the chapel was demolished, the pilgrimage has been made to the parish church, and it still takes place at present; not even traces of the chapel remain today. It seems to have been built around the middle of the 17th century, and its foundation is attributed to Sebastião de Oliveira, who owned land in that locality.
We also know of other chapels with the same dedication: one in the parish of Ponta do Sol (‘point of the sun’), another in the parish of Monte, another in the parish of Estreito da Calheta (‘the narrows of Calheta’) and a fourth in the parish of São Vicente.
The first of these chapels was built in 1656 at the behest of Diogo Ferreira de Mesquita and his wife, Dona Isabel de Meneses, and was endowed by a deed of 14 September of the same year. The second was built by Inácio Ferreira Pinto in 1684 and rebuilt a century later by João José Bettencourt de Freitas; the inspection allowing acts of worship to be held in it took place on 5 July 1784. The third, of recent foundation, was built at the behest of Dona Inácia Bettencourt Perestrelo in 1858; the deed of endowment dates from 11 September of the same year and the canonical inspection from 17 April 1860. The last was erected in 1685 by Father Manuel Gomes Garcês.
The chapel of Our Lady of Deliverance in the parish of Estreito da Calheta is today (1921) the property of Francisco Bettencourt Pimenta and stands on the lombo (ridge between valleys) known as Lombo dos Reis (‘kings’ ridge’).
