Map: Madeira (1)

An inhabited locality (sítio) in the parish (freguesia) of Estreito da Calheta (‘the narrows of Calheta’). It is usually divided into two localities, Igreja (‘church’) Acima and Igreja Abaixo, according to their position relative to the Igreja Paroquial (‘parish church’). Here stands the chapel of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception (Nossa Senhora da Conceição), founded by André de França e Andrade around 1672. It was the seat of one of the largest entailed estates in Madeira, whose last administrator was the 1st Count of Calçada (1812–1906).
