Map: Madeira (4)

An inhabited locality (sítio) in the parish (freguesia) of Calheta (‘small cove’). Here stands the chapel of Our Lady of Good Success (Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso), built by Lourenço da Costa in 1683. The old chapel of Our Lady of the Star (Nossa Senhora da Estrela) also stood here; the seat of the parish was established in it when the parish was created, as we noted in the article on the parish of Calheta. There was also a chapel dedicated to St Quiteria in this locality, built in 1724 by João Homem de Abreu. Moving the seat of the town (vila) of Calheta to this locality has often been proposed.
