St Francis Xavier (chapels)
Original title: São Francisco Xavier (Capelas de)
Chapels of St Francis Xavier in Calheta (1693), Santa Cruz (1684) and Porto da Cruz.
In the locality (sítio) of Salão (‘hall’), in the parish (freguesia) of Calheta (‘small cove’), at the place called Cadeado (‘padlock’), stands a small chapel of this name, still used for worship. It was founded by Manuel da Silva Pinheiro in 1693, and its deed of endowment is dated 7 August of the same year. It belongs to the heirs of Dona Vicência Júlia de França Dória (1921).
João Vieira de Afonseca built a chapel with the same patron saint in the parish of Santa Cruz (‘Holy Cross’) in 1684.
There was a chapel of the same dedication in the parish of Porto da Cruz (‘harbour of the cross’), in the locality of Cruz da Guarda (‘cross of the guard’). Its founder is unknown; among its last owners were João Francisco Moniz de Meneses Cabral and his wife Dona Maria Isidora Álvares de Carvalho, who bequeathed it to their nephew, Father Francisco Xavier de Sousa e Castro.
