Lombo do Salão

Lombo do Salão is an inhabited locality in the parish of Calheta, notable for its several chapels, including those of Santo António dos Milagres, Santos Cosme e Damião (1681) and São Francisco Xavier (1693).

An inhabited locality (sítio) in the parish (freguesia) of Calheta (‘small cove’). At the place called Vale dos Amores (‘valley of loves’) there is a small chapel dedicated to Santo António dos Milagres (St Anthony of Padua, Wonder-worker), which is today (1921) the property of Juvenal Raimundo de Vasconcelos. This locality was also once home to the chapel of Sts Cosmas and Damian (Santos Cosme e Damião), founded in 1681 by the physician António de França Gomes. At the spot known as Cadeado (‘padlock’) there is still a chapel dedicated to São Francisco Xavier (St Francis Xavier), built in 1693 by Manuel da Silva Pinheiro.

  • Manuel da Silva Pinheiro built the chapel of São Francisco Xavier at Cadeado, Lombo do Salão, Calheta, and endowed it by deed on 7 August 1693.
