Lombo do Doutor

Inhabited locality in Calheta parish named after Dr Pedro Berenguer de Lemilhana, a Spaniard who founded an entail here; it had chapels of 1505 and 1708.

An inhabited locality (sítio) in the parish (freguesia) of Calheta (‘small cove’). It was named after Dr Pedro Berenguer de Lemilhana, who founded an entailed estate (morgadio) here. He was a native of Spain and a moço fidalgo (junior nobleman of the Royal Household) of the Royal Household. The chapel of Jesus-Maria-José once stood in this locality, founded in 1708 by João de Andrade Berenguer Neto, a descendant of Dr Pedro Berenguer. There was also a chapel of St Catherine here, built by Rodrigo Enes in 1505. The well-known village (lugar, settlement rank below a town) of Vale da Bica (‘spout valley’) lies in this locality.
