An inhabited locality (sítio) in the parish (freguesia) of Calheta (‘small cove’), named after the early settler Luís de Atouguia, who held sesmaria (royal land grant to settlers on condition of cultivation) lands here and founded an entailed estate (morgadio) on them. There was once a chapel here dedicated to Our Lady of the Good Death (Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte), founded by Francisco Homem de Couto in 1661. The chapel of São Pedro de Alcântara (St Peter of Alcántara), formerly also known as St John the Baptist, still stands here; João Baptista Teixeira had it built in 1783. In this same locality, at the place called Vargem de Baixo (‘lower meadow’), António Moniz de Meneses and his wife Dona Catarina de Meneses built a chapel consecrated to Our Lady of Pity (Nossa Senhora da Piedade) in 1657.
