Atouguia
Entry on the Atouguia family of Madeira, descended from Luiz de Atouguia, an early settler from Beja who served as treasurer to D. Manuel, Duke of Beja; it notes their sesmaria lands at the Lombo do Atouguia in Calheta and their coat of arms.
Luís de Atouguia was one of the first settlers of this island and perhaps the first here to bear this surname. He was a native of Beja, the son of Luís Afonso de Atouguia and Dona Isabel Telo. In Madeira he served as treasurer to Dom Manuel, the future Manuel I, when he was Duke of Beja and Grand Master of the Order of Christ (Ordem de Cristo). This Luís de Atouguia, or one of his close descendants, held sesmaria (royal land grant to settlers on condition of cultivation) lands in the parish (freguesia) of Calheta (‘small cove’), at the locality (sítio) still called the Lombo do Atouguia today, to which he gave his name. Arms: ‘On a field gules, quartered by a cross of gold voided of the field, and in each quarter a fleur-de-lis of gold; a bordure of the same; crest, a demi-lion rampant of gold.’
