Jesus, Mary and Joseph (chapel)
Original title: Jesus Maria José.(Capela de)
Notes on several chapels dedicated to Jesus-Maria-José in Madeira, founded in the 17th and early 18th centuries in Câmara de Lobos, Calheta, Sé and Monte/Santa Luzia.
Sebastião Gonçalves Cordeiro and his wife Luzia de Ornelas founded the chapel of Jesus-Maria-José in 1694 in the parish (freguesia) of Câmara de Lobos (‘seals’ den’), at the locality (sítio) that still bears that name today. Its deed of endowment is dated 10 May 1694.
At the locality of Lombo do Doutor (‘the doctor’s ridge’), in the parish of Calheta (‘small cove’), there was also a chapel of Jesus-Maria-José. It was founded in 1708 by João de Andrade Berenguer Neto and his wife Dona Tomásia de França Andrade, who endowed it by public deed on 30 October of that year.
A chapel with the same dedication existed in the parish of the Sé (Funchal Cathedral), at a site we cannot determine; it was founded in 1626 by Canon Manuel Afonso. Mateus da Gama Ferreira also founded a chapel dedicated to Jesus-Maria-José in the parish of Monte (‘hill’), on land that later came to belong to the parish of Santa Luzia (‘St Lucy’). It must have been built before 1676, the year in which the parish of Santa Luzia was created.
