Santa Luzia

Santa Luzia is one of the four urban parishes of Funchal, in the upper, northern part of the city. It was created in 1676 from parts of the Sé and Monte parishes; its present church was completed around 1741, and it became a julgado of the Funchal comarca in 1927. It is noted as the dampest district of Funchal, and the council archive was stored there from 1807.

Ambrósio Vieira de Andrade built a chapel of St Francis in Santa Luzia.

Following the prince regent's resolution of October 1676, royal charters of D. Pedro II dated 28 December 1676 created several new parishes and curacies, including Paul do Mar, Prazeres, Santa Luzia, Camacha, Serra de Água, Arco de São Jorge, Achadas da Cruz, Estreito and Arco da Calheta; collegiate benefices at Câmara de Lobos were abolished to fund some of them.

For fear of an enemy landing, the Funchal council archive was moved to Santa Luzia and then to Monte.

Prince Alexander of the Netherlands died at Tomaz Burnett's quinta in Santa Luzia on 20 February 1848; his body was taken aboard the Dutch steamer Phoenix on 3 April.
