Map: Madeira (4)

In 1611, on land in the parish (freguesia) of Monte (‘hill’) that later came to belong to the parish of Santa Luzia (‘St Lucy’), Tristão Gomes de Castro founded a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Joys (Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres). There was a chapel of the same dedication in the parish of Santa Maria Maior (‘St Mary Major’); it was entailed, and in 1610 its administrator was João Gomes de Castro. We do not know the year of its foundation.
