Gomes de Castro (Tristão)
Entry on Tristão Gomes de Castro (1543–1611), Madeiran entailed-estate holder and Latin poet, author of the unpublished Argonautica da Cavallaria.
He was born on this island in 1543, the son of Cristovam Martins de Agrinhão and Dona Joana Gomes de Castro. He was a descendant of João Gomes, the Troubadour, and administered the entailed house (casa vinculada) that he inherited from his parents. He studied away from the island and was reputed among his contemporaries to be a man of wide learning. He cultivated poetry, and several genealogies say that he was an excellent Latin poet. Diogo Barbosa Machado, in the Biblioteca Lusitana, deals with Tristão Gomes de Castro and cites the work he wrote in two volumes, Argonautica da Cavallaria, Façanhas de Lesmundo, which remained unpublished. He died in 1611.
