Ribeiro Neto (Manuel)
Manuel Ribeiro Neto, a seventeenth-century jurist and canon of Angra Cathedral, said by some to be from Funchal and by Barbosa Machado to be from Angra, who wrote on civil and canon law, including works on Funchal church matters.
In the Dicionário Popular, edited by Pinheiro Chagas, we find the following about this man: ‘Portuguese jurist, a native of Funchal, who came to Portugal to take his degree at the University of Coimbra (Universidade de Coimbra) and, on returning to Madeira, was promoted to a canonry in the Cathedral of Angra. He wrote and printed a Latin volume of Commentarios de Direito Civil and various pleadings on canon law. He died in 1681, having been born at the beginning of the 17th century or the end of the 16th.’
Diogo Barbosa Machado, however, gives Ribeiro Neto as born in Angra, which we consider more probable, although we cannot state it beyond all doubt. Among the works on canon law that he published are the following, cited in the Biblioteca Lusitana: Alegações de direito sobre as meias conezias do Funchal, Officios que tachou o cabido and Explicaçam do privilegio de hum altar no Funchal, all of which appeared in one volume in 1660.
