    The Anglo-Portuguese royal marriage of D. Catarina de Bragança and Carlos II led to large-scale Madeira wine exports by English merchants, who enjoyed tax exemption on them from 1660 to 1662.

    Madeira was granted to Infanta D. Catarina de Bragança by royal warrant of 23 November 1660 (procuration dated 18 November), and Governor Furtado presented the donation deed to the Funchal council for registration on 7 December; it was also registered at Machico.

    Diogo de Mendonça Furtado took office as governor of Madeira.
