Sauvaire

Madeiran family surname descended from Honorato Sauvaire of Marseilles, who came to Madeira as French consul around 1660. A consul named Sauvaire reported a volcanic island near São Miguel in 1721.

This family surname’, says the annotator of the Saudades, ‘derives from Honorato Sauvaire, a native of Marseilles, who came to this island of Madeira as consul of France around 1660.

The Biblioteca Açoreana states that the work Description Nautique des Açores, by Charles Philipe de Kerhallet, published in Paris in 1865, cites the ‘Letter of 2 April 1721 on the volcanic island that then appeared near São Miguel, sighted by the commander of the English corvette Richard e Izabel, by Sauvaire, French consul general in Madeira.
