Daniel da Costa, royal physician resident in Funchal, who wrote a life of Bishop Luís Figueiredo de Lemos included in Frutuoso's history.
Speaking of the Bishop of Funchal, Dom Luís Figueiredo de Lemos, Gaspar Frutuoso says: ‘Of his illustrious lineage I shall set down a chapter, which the most learned Doctor Daniel da Costa, Physician to His Majesty, a noble person of great learning and virtue, residing in the city of Funchal, later composed about him in lofty style, for the greater illumination of the nobility, life, virtues and manners of the same Lord.’ Diogo Barbosa Machado says that the said work was entitled Contra ponto, ou Vida do VII Bispo do Funchal, and was included in the Historia das Ilhas.
