Costa

The Costa family of Madeira, descended from two early settlers, Luís Álvares da Costa and Nuno da Costa.

There are two branches of this family, one descended from Luís Álvares da Costa and the other from Nuno da Costa. Luís Álvares da Costa came to Madeira in the time of Afonso V; here he served as overseer (vedor) and superintendent of the royal treasury (provedor da fazenda), and he founded the Convent of São Francisco (St Francis of Assisi), Funchal. Nuno da Costa was one of the first settlers of Machico and one of the representatives of this town (vila) and of Santa Cruz (‘Holy Cross’) before the king for the granting of the charter (foral) of Machico in 1515.

Chronology
  • Machico and Santa Cruz jointly received a foral with privileges, providing for a customs house.
