Cabral
Account of Diogo Cabral, early settler and son-in-law of Zarco, founder of the Cabral family in Madeira, with the family's arms.
One of the four noblemen whom Dom Afonso sent to Madeira to marry the daughters of the discoverer was Diogo Cabral, son of Fernão Álvares Cabral, chief health officer (guarda-mor) of Prince Henry the Navigator. He was one of the first settlers of this island, and here he married Brites Gonçalves da Câmara, the second daughter of João Gonçalves Zarco. Diogo Cabral had the chapel of Our Lady of the Star (Nossa Senhora da Estrela) built at Calheta (‘small cove’); it had been designed by Zarco, who had earnestly urged its construction on his children. Cabral held extensive lands there as a sesmaria (royal land grant to settlers on condition of cultivation), granted to him by his father-in-law. He died on 15 December 1486 and lies buried in the chapel he built. He was the grandfather of Tristão Vaz da Veiga. He was the first on this island to bear the surname Cabral.
Arms of the Cabrals: two goats passant, adorned with purple and black; crest: one of the goats of the shield.
