    The Funchal council ordered foreigners, including sugar growers, to leave the island by September, but the Duke, lord of Madeira, blocked the expulsion by letter of 7 August.

    Diogo Cabral, Zarco's son-in-law and founder of the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Estrela at Calheta, died and was buried in it.
