Family entry on the Sousa surname in Madeira, descended from two branches: Rui de Sousa and Antão Álvares de Sousa.
There are, it seems, two branches of this surname. One descends from Rui de Sousa, a fidalgo (nobleman of the lesser nobility) of the household of John II, who married on this island Constança Cabral, daughter of Diogo Cabral and of Brites Gonçalves da Câmara, Zarco’s daughter. The other derives from Antão Álvares de Sousa, a noble knight, who settled in Santa Cruz (‘Holy Cross’) around 1480.
Garcia Homem de Sousa, Zarco’s son-in-law, had a daughter named Leonor Homem, who married Duarte Pestana.
