Sousa (Garcia Homem de)
Nobleman sent by the king to Madeira to marry a daughter of João Gonçalves Zargo; he wed Catarina Gonçalves da Câmara, held sesmaria lands and built the fortified manor of Santo Amaro.
He was one of the fidalgos sent by the king to this island to marry the daughters of João Gonçalves Zarco, and he married Zarco’s third daughter, Catarina Gonçalves da Câmara. He held sesmaria (royal land grant to settlers on condition of cultivation) lands in São Martinho (‘St Martin’) and Santo António, and built the fortified manor house of Santo Amaro (‘St Maurus’) to defend himself against his brothers-in-law, with whom he had quarrels for reasons that are not well known today. He was, says Dr Azevedo, a proud and violent man (see Santo Amaro (chapels)).
Henrique Henriques de Noronha says that Garcia Homem de Sousa was descended from Pedro Homem, one of the twelve knights who went to England.

England appears in the Elucidário as the first main market for Madeira embroidery and the main importer of Madeiran wicker.
