Our Lady of Prayers (chapels)
Original title: Nossa Senhora das Preces (Capelas de)
Three chapels of Nossa Senhora das Preces, in Santo António (c.1708), Câmara de Lobos (1683) and Machico, each giving its name to the surrounding site.
On the altar of the chapel of Preces (‘prayers’) in the parish (freguesia) of Santo António (‘St Anthony’) one can read the date 1708, which is probably that of its construction. We believe that this chapel was an entailed foundation (instituição vincular, a morgado or capela); in 1770 its administrator was Captain Rodrigo da Costa, and in 1796 the holder of the entail (morgado) Joaquim Manuel de França. The chapel and the adjoining house were rebuilt in 1856 by their then owner, Dona Joana de Albuquerque e França, who died there on 12 February 1884. This chapel gave its name to the locality (sítio) in which it was built.
Father Francisco de Canha e Mendonça had the chapel of Our Lady of Prayers (Nossa Senhora das Preces) built in the parish of Câmara de Lobos, in the locality that later took this name. Its foundation dates from 1683. It still exists, but remains closed to worship.
In the parish of Machico there is another chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Prayers. We do not know when it was built; it was rebuilt by António Tiago da Silva in 1884.
