Preces
Caminho Grande or Preces, a sítio in the parish of Câmara de Lobos, with the chapels of Nossa Senhora das Preces (1683) and Nossa Senhora da Nazaré (1757) and the ruins of a São Cândido chapel.
Caminho Grande (‘main road’) or Preces, a locality in the parish (freguesia) of Câmara de Lobos (‘seals’ den’). Here stands the chapel of Our Lady of Prayers (Nossa Senhora das Preces), which gave the place its name; it was founded in 1683 by Father Francisco da Cunha e Mendonça. In the same locality is the chapel of Our Lady of Nazaré (Nossa Senhora da Nazaré), built in 1757 by Dona Maria do Rosário Henriques, widow of Pedro Bernardes Cordeiro. At the place known as Fonte da Rocha (‘rock spring’), the ruins can still be seen of an old chapel dedicated to São Cândido (St Candidus), which Canon Francisco Cândido Correia Henriques had built in 1732. It has 96 households (fogos, literally ‘hearths’) and 516 inhabitants.
