An inhabited locality (sítio) of the parish (freguesia) of Câmara de Lobos (‘seals’ den’), taking in part of the cluster of houses around the small cove. It is the seat of the municipality (concelho), and here are the town hall, various public offices, the post and telegraph office, the parish church and the chapel of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception (Nossa Senhora da Conceição). This place was never raised to the rank of town (vila), although it is commonly called one, even in official documents (see the articles headed Câmara de Lobos).
